Traditionally, hospice was a medieval name for a way station for weary pilgrims and travelers where they could be cared for and replenished. Today, the term is used to describe an organized program of care for people going through life's last station. Hospice exists to affirm life and death with dignity by providing support and care for persons in the last phases of incurable disease so that they can live as fully and as comfortably as possible. Hospice care focuses on two main goals: relieving pain and other symptoms associated with advanced illness; and providing supportive care to the patient and family. Helping Hands and Hearts Hospice supports the dying person's choice to remain at home and die there. Hospice personnel help patients and their families with the grieving that occurs during the patient's last illness and continues to be available throughout the mourning process.
